Just fine

(Click on text to expand)

There are seasons when you're just trying to make it through the day.

You're running on too little sleep. The dishes are piling up. The laundry has become furniture. You grab whatever food is easiest because cooking feels like one more thing you don't have the energy for. You tell yourself you'll catch up tomorrow, but tomorrow keeps moving further away.

Then someone asks, "How are you?"

"I'm fine,” you say with a smile.

Most people accept the answer. It's automatic. It's what we've been taught to say. But sometimes "I'm fine" is less of an answer and more of a survival strategy.

We wear masks for a lot of reasons.

Sometimes we're afraid people will judge us.

Sometimes we're afraid they'll leave if they know what's really going on.

Sometimes we've convinced ourselves that nothing will ever change, so why say anything?

Sometimes we've tried opening up before and felt unheard, misunderstood, or disappointed.

And, sometimes... we've worn the mask for so long that we're not even sure what's underneath it anymore.

The problem isn't that you learned to wear the mask. The problem is that carrying it every day is exhausting.

It takes so much energy to hide your fear, your grief, your shame, your anxiety, or your loneliness. Energy that could be spent healing instead of surviving.

Therapy isn't about ripping the mask off all at once. It's about finding a place where you don't have to wear it quite so tightly.

Therapy is, or should be, place where you can tell your truth at your own pace.

A place where you don't have to earn compassion by pretending everything is okay.

At Healing Springs Counseling, we believe that lasting change begins with understanding yourself—not judging yourself. The more you understand why you've had to survive the way you have, the easier it becomes to trust yourself, let go of old patterns, and move toward a life that feels more genuine.

You don't have to be "fine" to begin. You just have to be willing to start where you are.

If this feels familiar or relevant in your life, you don't have to face it alone. We're here to support you. We encourage you to reach out by phone, email, or through the contact form on this site.
