Overwhelm Series Part 1: Why You Might Feel So Overwhelmed Right Now (And Why It Makes Sense)

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing too much. It comes from holding too much. Not just your own life — but the constant awareness of everything happening around you. The uncertainty. The tension. The sense that things are shifting in ways you can’t control or fully predict.

If you’ve been feeling more overwhelmed, more on edge, or more easily drained lately, there may be a reason for that. Your nervous system might be trying to keep up with something that doesn’t have a clear endpoint. And that’s hard.

We are wired to respond to stress in short bursts — something happens, we react, and then eventually we settle down. But when stress is ongoing — when there’s no clear resolution — your system doesn’t get that same opportunity to come down. Instead, it stays partially activated. Not in full panic, necessarily. But not fully at rest either.

Some people feel this as anxiety:

  • racing thoughts

  • difficulty focusing

  • a constant sense of urgency

Others feel it as shutdown:

  • exhaustion

  • lack of motivation

  • emotional numbness

Many people move between the two. This doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means your system is responding to sustained pressure.

There’s also something else that happens in times like this. Your capacity changes. Things that used to feel manageable:

  • errands

  • conversations

  • decisions

…can start to feel heavier.

Not because you’ve become less capable, but because more of your internal resources are already being used just to stay regulated. So if you’ve found yourself thinking:

  • “Why is this so hard right now?”

  • “Why can’t I handle things the way I used to?”

The answer isn’t that you’re failing. It’s that you’re adapting. And adaptation, especially over time, can feel a lot like exhaustion.

Before we move into what helps, it’s important to start here:

What you’re feeling makes sense.
